Description
A new one for us that’s fast growing with flowers that glow in the landscape all summer long, Teller Red forms a broadly rounded shrub to 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide clothed in large, medium to dark green leaves. From early summer to early fall you’ll see abundant sturdy stems bearing large, up to 8-inch diameter, lacecap flower clusters with a flat cushion of cream to soft-pink center flowers surrounded by a ring of extra large, ray florets in brilliant red or pink shades. You choose the flower color. Acid soil makes more red flowers while alkaline soil makes pink. Add aluminum sulfate to acidify soil or agricultural lime to sweeten soil. The flowers are excellent for cutting and display in your favorite vase.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide in a rounded mound, the Teller Red Hydrangea can be grown in garden beds or containers. It’s ideal for use as a specimen or accent in home foundation plantings, flowering shrub borders and perennial gardens. In larger landscape spaces it is especially dramatic in small to large groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a colorful hedge. A fine addition to red theme gardens, Hydrangea gardens, cottage gardens and cut flower gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Teller Red Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and part shade. For best flowering, we suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. Morning and/or evening sun are okay but we suggest filtered sun or shade in the afternoon. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Flower color is your choice. Acidic soils will make red flowers while a neutral to slightly alkaline soil will make pink flowers.
