Description
Perfectly named for its brilliant scarlet red fall foliage that continues well into winter, and the official tree of the District of Columbia, the Scarlet Oak is a fast-growing North American native that at 50 to 70 feet tall and 40 to 50 feet wide is a perfect choice for both an ornamental and shade tree. A somewhat pyramidal crown develops from stout, ascending branches sporting attractive green leaves that turn scarlet red in fall and finally to a deeper burgundy-red going into winter. Its acorns are an important source of food for many wildlife species. The Scarlet Oak is highly adaptable and easy to grow in a wide range of soils. It’s no wonder this is the most popular oak in America!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 50 to 70 feet tall and 40 to 50 feet wide, the Scarlet Oak is ideal for use around the home and in parks or other properties that can accommodate its size. An excellent shade tree around the home and for outdoor living areas and is a very nice specimen in sunny landscape and woodland borders. A fine addition to wildlife gardens where the acorns are eaten by squirrels, chipmunks, deer, wild turkeys, blue jays and red-headed woodpeckers.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 60+ feet for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Scarlet Oak Tree is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to wet soil and full to most sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
