Description
If you’re looking for a super hardy flowering perennial shrub to grow in a sunny spot that stays moist to wet all the time, Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly known as Hardy Hibiscus or Swamp Rose Mallow, is a vigorous and foriferous North American native that loves life on the moist side…and it’s cold hardy to -20F! In summer, very showy, dinner plate-sized flowers 6-9” in diameter have five overlapping white, creamy white or pink petals surrounding a reddish-purple to dark crimson eye. Each flower has a prominent, elongated central stamen with white to soft yellow anthers. Individual flowers last 1-2 days, but new flowers open each day in rapid succession throughout summer well into fall. At the peak of bloom, a large plant can produce 20 or more flowers per day that the hummingbirds and butterflies will certainly appreciate. Alternate, broad-leaves with toothed margins provide a tropical effect in garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Rose Mallow is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings or as a background plant in perennial gardens and flowering shrub or landscape borders, especially where there is consistently moist soil and plenty of sunshine. Great around ponds, pools and other bodies of water. A fine addition to bog gardens, perennial gardens, tropical look gardens, hummingbird gardens and white theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Rose Mallow are very easy to grow. They will tolerate dry periods but are most happy in consistently moist to even “swampy” soils. Though they will tolerate some light shade, plants bloom their best in full to mostly sun. Maintenance is minimal. Prune annually in spring after new growth begins to emerge. At that time cut the plant back to just above the new growth.
