Description
One of the most unique trees you’ll ever plant and enjoy in your garden, Cotinus x ‘Grace’ is a magnificent small Smoke Tree, or what some call Smokebush, that gets its name from the large, smoke-like pink flower “puffs” that nearly cover the tree during summer. But the color show isn’t only about the unique flowers as the attractive foliage of ‘Grace’ distinguishes it from from other varieties in the genus. Ovate to obovate Eucalyptus-like leaves to 3 inches long emerge a lovely wine red in spring, gradually maturing to a smoky purplish-plum-red in summer. The leaves hold their color well throughout the season turning a striking reddish-orange in fall before dropping for winter. Grace is very tolerant of poor and dry soils so is a fine selection for the Xeriscape(low water needs). A site to behold in the garden!
Landscape & Garden Uses
A moderate grower with a broad and rounded form, the Grace Smoke Tree will eventually top out at about 15 feet, making it a great choice for a number of planting options throughout the landscape or garden. It can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree. Because of its uniqueness, we usually suggest using it as a focal point specimen in the landscape, as we do with Japanese Maples. That said, Grace is also nice in groupings or or plant one on either side to accentuate an entryway. A fine addition to rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:Â 8 feet apart for hedges;Â 16 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Grace Smoke Tree is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained to dry soil of average to low fertility. It adapts very well to dry and rocky soils. High drought tolerance makes it a fine selection for dry areas and the Xeriscape (low water needs). Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. The best foliage color is achieved in full sun however will tolerate some light shade.

This is approximately the fourth plant I have purchased from Wilson Bros. and I am thrilled when I get the box with all the staples and packing so no plant jostling or damage occurs. I got the three plants (the cotinus and the two japanese weeping maples into the ground using information the Wilson Bros. company supplies on their webpage. The plant material quality is stellar. Azaelas I bought last year are doing very well. The plant variety makes me come back to Wilson Bros. very often. So does the communication which is so old school! but so so important.————————————————————-Wow!!!! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come!
