Description
Blooming on both old and new wood, All Summer Beauty produces large 6 inch diameter flower clusters in various shades of blue, lavender and pink from late spring all the way through summer…with some having multiple color shades on the same flower cluster! The final flowers in late summer to early fall will persist and hold color until the first heavy frost. The colors will depend on soil pH. An acid soil creates more blue and lavender shades while a neutral or alkaline soil makes more pink and lavender shades. So the flower color is up to you. Apply aluminum sulfate for blue and agricultural lime for pink. The large leaves of All Summer beauty are a deeply veined rich green providing the perfect backdrop for the season long flower show.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally to about 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide in a rounded mound, All Summer Beauty Hydrangea can be grown in garden beds or containers. It is ideal for use as a specimen or accent in home foundation plantings, flowering shrub borders, and perennial gardens. In larger landscape spaces it is especially dramatic in groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a colorful hedge. A fine addition to hydrangea gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Planting Zone 5a, where this Hydrangea variety is not winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
All Summer Beauty Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to part shade in northern zones and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in southern zones. For best flowering, we suggest 4 hours of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Flower color is your choice. Acidic soil will make blue flowers while alkaline soil will make pink flowers, and neutral to slightly alkaline soil will make blue, lavender, and pink. Apply aluminum sulphate for blue and lavender flowers and agricultural lime for pink and lavender flowers.
Note: All Summer Beauty is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds that formed on “old wood” (during the previous year). This means that even though it is tempting to cut them back in the winter, when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don’t do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don’t cut them off if you want flowers.
